about

An elegy for fallen friends and those still falling

lyrics

I heard that you left us last night
You climbed up the Story Bridge
spread your arms and you took flight
A ragged, tattooed lark
falling into the dark

I don't think you mixed it up
You stirred it with your dirty fit
and passed it like a cup of poison
I declined
and my life-line got longer then

Read this palm
and you will see the Story Bridge is etched there
like the pin-pricks in your arm

I knew a girl with fire in her guts
She fought tooth and claw for freedom
then bled hers out with paper cuts
I hope that their prison was kinder
than the prison of her mind

We all drew our lines in the sand
Then we stepped across them time again
until we reached the edge of land
Some of us struck out for shore again
but some of us were struck out of
all time until the end

Read this palm
and you will see all of your stories etched there:
the tales that kept me from more harm

Wisdom and luck share a face
and one of them I can't tell which
got me to this place
I never loved you properly then
but I love you all now so much more
if I could see you here again
I'd tell you there is something here to live for

So let this be a tale for all the rest
who crush their pills and mix their ills
to incremental deaths

Don't take flight
The shore is still in sight
The numbness won't last all night
my fettered friends

about

Breckin Melbourne, Australia

Breckin, which means freckled, is the moniker of Melbourne-based visual artist, poet and singer-songwriter, Heather Marsh.
Her debut album, Shiner is both bruised and brilliant. It illuminates and holds an oblique mirror to the perennial subject of love and loss in a series of songs that are equal parts elegy, sympathy card and therapy session.
